Durn furners Absentee Ballots?By Rick Horowitz
Click. "Great story, Cassandra -- thanks! Now it's on to presidential politics, where neither contender shows any signs of becoming warm and cuddly. In fact, the Bush-Kerry battle continues for every swing vote in battleground states like ours -- and for more of what's on the minds of these crucial 'undecideds,' let's check in with Tony." "Thanks, Mark. I'm here in our 'Eight More Months of This?!' minivan, and I'm joined by one of the members of our weekly focus group, Mr. Warren Tyrell from Adowanna. Welcome, Warren." "Thanks for having me, Tony." "Now Warren, as Mark was saying, you're one of those undecided voters who really hold the keys to the White House for these two candidates. I understand your thinking has been changing a bit lately." "A bit, yeah. I'm still going around, you know, so it's not like it's set in stone or anything like that, but -- " "I understand you've started leaning toward President Bush -- is that accurate?" "For now, anyway. Like I said, it's not set in stone, but if I had to vote today, it'd be Bush. For the past week or two, it's been Kerry, but now it's Bush." "Why don't you tell us what changed your mind." "I'd say the French." "The French?" "Well, Tony, the biggest issue for me has always been the economy. You know how tough things have been around here lately -- everybody's worried sick about hanging onto their jobs. And if you're laid off, forget about finding something else!" "And that's because all those jobs have moved overseas? To France?" "To everywhere -- but that's not what changed my mind. See, with all those jobs gone since Bush took office, I figure the other guy has to be better, and he won't just be doing things to help the rich." "But you say you're leaning to Bush." "That's right. After that thing Kerry said about those foreign leaders." "That would be Kerry claiming -- they're still fighting over precisely what he said -- but that would be Kerry claiming that many 'foreign' leaders, or maybe it was 'more' leaders, have told him they're rooting for him to beat Bush?" "Sure. 'You gotta beat this guy,' 'We need a new policy' -- stuff like that." "And you think he's lying? You don't think they said it?" "No, I think they probably did say it -- maybe not in so many words, but sure. They don't like Bush, and they think he's messed up the war and things, and they want him out. I can see where they're coming from, absolutely. I feel pretty much the same way myself." "But then why -- " "Because it's our election! It's just not right that they're rooting -- France or Germany or whoever said it -- for one of our guys over the other one. You don't see me voting against the president of France, do you?" "Of course, it's not like they're actually -- " "It just burns me." "I can tell. So even though you favor Kerry on your top issues, you'd vote against him because the French might like him, too?" "Exactly! I mean, what if we started picking other countries' leaders? How would they like that? I'll bet they'd -- " Click. Posted 3/16/04. Click
