Caution: Falling Potatoes

By Rick Horowitz

In a back booth at Club GOP...

"Will he listen?"

"He has to listen."

"But will he?"

"Listen? He has to."

"He can't avoid it any longer."

"He can't avoid it any longer. He has to shake things up."

"But will he?"

"Shake things up?"

"Will he listen. He hates hearing this stuff."

"He has to hear this stuff. If he doesn't shake things up, nothing changes."

"Exactly."

"And if nothing changes, everything gets worse."

"Exactly."

"It's already getting worse. Have you seen the numbers?"

"Down again?"

"Down everywhere. Down across the board."

"It's the war."

"And everything else."

"Because of the war."

"And everything else."

"Does he know?"

"He has to know."

"But does he?"

"Know? I don't know."

"Then somebody has to tell him."

"'Mr. President, the bottom is falling out.' You want to tell him?"

"I don't want to tell him."

"Somebody has to tell him. 'Mr. President, according to the latest polls...'"

"He doesn't care about polls. You can't talk to him about polls."

"Then what do you talk to him about?"

"I don't know. But you can't talk to him about polls."

"Potatoes. 'Mr. President, according to the latest potatoes...'"

"Better than polls."

"'And our internal potatoes are even worse, Mr. President.'"

"You think it'll work?"

"Something has to work. He has to show he gets it."

"Does he get it?"

"He'd better get it. Our guys are in a panic."

"It's the war."

"And everything else. They're seeing the same potatoes -- "

"Polls."

"They're seeing the same polls we're seeing."

"And they're in a panic."

"He has to shake things up. Somebody has to go."

"And that makes it stop?"

"Stop?"

"The panic. That makes it stop?"

"It's a start. Somebody has to tell him."

"Will he listen?"

"He has to listen."

"But will he?"
