It
was nearly unimaginable back then: Israelis and Palestinians
shaking hands on the White House lawn. It's even harder
to imagine now. Remember September of '93 in this Vintage

Torture? We had no idea!
The Buck Stops Somewhere Else
By Rick Horowitz
When it's apple-picking
time in Abu Ghraib,
You can pick and pick and pick until you're sore,
And for ev'ry deep suspicion,
Someone offers up contrition,
It's a problem they're determined to explore,
Though it's just some rotten apples, nothing more.
When it's apple-picking time in Abu Ghraib,
Once the photographs have slithered door-to-door,
Horror scenes that shock the nation --
Torture, fear and degradation --
It's an issue that our leaders can't ignore,
Though it's just some rotten apples, nothing more.
When it's apple-picking time in Abu Ghraib,
And the brass has said how strongly they deplore,
They'll go climbing up the tree limbs
Once they've finished with the prelims,
And pursue the truth down ev'ry corridor,
Though they know it's rotten apples, nothing more.
When it's apple-picking time in Abu Ghraib,
Wary prosecutors treat it like a chore,
They attack the moral fitness
Of each lower-ranking witness,
While for higher-ups they drop the 2-by-4,
Since it's only rotten apples, nothing more.
When it's apple-picking time in Abu Ghraib,
And investigations pile up on the floor,
Anyone from here to Saturn
Has to see that there's a pattern,
But the brass says, "These things happen in a war --
Just a couple rotten apples, nothing more."
When it's apple-picking time in Abu Ghraib,
And the lowest-hanging fruit is smeared with gore,
They'll insist that you're a liar
If you say the stain goes higher,
And you'll undermine that old esprit de corps,
All to catch some rotten apples, nothing more.
So it's apple-picking time in Abu Ghraib,
And the guilty pleas turn scandal into snore,
There's no brass tossed in the tar pit,
It's all swept beneath the carpet,
Just a mix of shame and mismatched metaphor,
When they say it's rotten apples, nothing more.
