Pullout politics That's DifferentBy Rick Horowitz
"Outrageous!" "You think so?" "Absolutely! It's outrageous, and it's disgraceful, and it's...it's..." "Disgusting?" "Absolutely disgusting! I mean, with our brave men and women over there in Iraq risking their lives every day, to even suggest we start pulling them out is a terrible idea. But that's all the Democrats are good for -- cut and run."
"Who?" "The Democrats. Cut and run. Wave the white flag of surrender. That's all they're good for. What a terrible idea!" "I wasn't talking about the Democrats." "You weren't?" "I was talking about Gen. Casey." "Gen. Casey." "Gen. Casey. Our top commander in Iraq? He and the president were discussing troop withdrawals just last week. Rotate two brigades out this September, and a whole lot more out by the end of 2007." "That's different." "That's one idea they were talking about, anyway." "That's different." "What's so different about it? It sounds like the same kind of thing the Democrats were suggesting in the Senate. And you guys were pounding the stuffing out of them for suggesting it." "Totally different! The Democrats wanted a timetable, and I'm sure what Gen. Casey wants -- well, what Gen. Casey wants is..." "A timetable?" "A phased redeployment. Based on conditions on the ground. And commanders on the ground." "But -- " "On the ground. Very important." "But it still doesn't sound all that different from what Sen. Levin was suggesting: Keep it flexible, but start pulling out troops by the end of this year. If Casey's talking about September, then he's moving them out even faster than the Democrats wanted!" "Different." "Different." "Absolutely! All Levin was talking about was getting the troops out -- he didn't say anything about winning. He didn't say anything about a 'victory strategy.'" "And Casey and the president?" "The president always talks about a 'victory strategy.' If you pull 'em out without talking about a 'victory strategy,' then it looks like a retreat. It looks like they forced us to go." "So even if the Democrats wanted our troops out on practically the same schedule that the president and Casey want them out...?" "Doesn't count. Not unless we talk about 'victory' while we're leaving. We have to go with our heads held high -- otherwise the terrorists win." "And that makes the Democrats unpatriotic wimps?" "Hey, if the shoe fits..." "And you don't feel even a bit hypocritical? Attacking them for suggesting the same kinds of troop withdrawals that the president is considering?" "Not the same thing at all! Not even close! The big difference between the president's plan for Iraq and the Democrats' plan for Iraq is -- " "Marching bands?" Posted 6/27/06.
