Very Big Dog, Very Short Leash

By Rick Horowitz

[Backstage at Hillaryland...]

"Is he done yet?"

"Almost."

"Why isn't he done yet?"

"He's almost done."

"We told him to keep it short."

"He is keeping it short."

"It's just an introduction."

"He knows it's just an introduction."

"Then why isn't he done yet?"

"He's almost done."

"And then I want him off the stage."

"As soon as he's done."

"I don't want him sitting there."

"Got it."

"As soon as he's done."

"Got it."

"We can't have him overshadowing her."

"Absolutely not."

"Or outperforming her."

"Absolutely not."

"Just get them to like her and get out of the way."

"Absolutely."

"Does he understand?"

"Of course he understands -- he does this stuff better than anyone."

"That's the problem."

"That's just a fact."

"But that's the problem -- she'll never be as good at it as he is."

"She doesn't have to be as good at it as he is. She only has to be good at it."

"Do you think she's good at it?"

"I think she's getting better at it."

"But still not good?"

"She's getting better at it. He's helping her get better at it."

"He owes her big time."

"Big time. He'll do everything he can for her."

"We don't want him doing everything he can for her. We want him doing just enough for her."

"Absolutely."

"Without overshadowing her."

"Of course not."

"Or outperforming her."

"Of course not."

"She wants to stand on her own."

"She needs to stand on her own. He's just here to tell them they don't really know her."

"They don't really know her."

"That's what he's telling them."

"They may think they know her -- "

"But they don't."

"Not really."

"That's what he's telling them. She may have been around for 15 years, but they don't really know her."

"Not at all."

"Not at all. And that she's the most qualified non-incumbent candidate he's ever seen."

"Will he say that?"

"He's already said that."

"Do you think he means it?"

"It doesn't matter if he means it -- it matters that he says it."

"He owes her big time."

"Big time."

"So he'll say it?"

"He's already said it."

"Excellent."

"Excellent."

"So why isn't he done yet?"
