It
was nearly unimaginable back then: Israelis and Palestinians
shaking hands on the White House lawn. It's even harder
to imagine now. Remember September of '93 in this Vintage

New name, same argument
A Supreme Court Nominee -- Chapter and Verse
By Rick Horowitz
From the bench
one contemplates,
Interrogates
And cogitates,
Concentrates
And ruminates,
Engages in profound debates.
All this work so captivates
That judges often thank the fates,
Yet one task lies beyond the gates,
Off-limits to all magistrates.
A proper justice hesitates --
She never, ever "legislates."
From the bench one calibrates,
Prognosticates
And formulates,
Explicates
And educates,
(And now and then infuriates),
But just as one delineates
The rightful powers of the states
Or who can finance candidates,
So, too, a justice demonstrates
Restraint in what she promulgates,
Or as the Prez abbreviates:
She never, ever "legislates."
He speaks the word that lubricates,
That animates,
That motivates,
That absolutely jubilates
The right and all their stablemates,
He speaks the phrase that validates,
The line that simply salivates,
The left just hyperventilates
While liver bile accumulates
And blood boils, then coagulates --
No wonder he reiterates:
She never...ever..."legislates."
