All Aboard the Rockies' Bandwagon!

By Rick Horowitz

My guys!

My fellas!

My Rockies!

Are they amazing, or what? I mean, when's the last time you saw a team doing the kinds of things the Rockies are doing? And not just occasionally, but day in and day out, and under playoff pressure!

Totally amazing! Everybody's out of their minds with shock.

But I never doubted it.

Other people may have been shocked -- but not me. I never once thought to myself, "This isn't the Rockies' year." Even when things looked their bleakest, I never, ever lost faith.

That's what being a fan is all about. A true fan, I mean -- not one of those Rockie-come-latelys who've been crawling out of the woodwork all of a sudden. Now they're the darlings of the media. Now they've got their pictures on magazine covers, and everybody wants to talk to them. It just shows you what going on a hot streak at the right time of year can do for your reputation.

But some of us knew it all along, even before The Streak started. I remember very distinctly saying to somebody way back in the middle of September, "You know, this is exactly the kind of team that could go out and win 21 of their next 22 games." Or maybe I just said it to myself -- the important thing is I said it. I remember it like it was yesterday.

And it wasn't the first time either. Even in spring training, when they took the field in -- well, I certainly don't have to tell you where they took the field -- even then, I could see something special. All that enthusiasm, but a certain kind of quiet confidence, too. The kind of confidence that winners have.

So I knew. Which is why I wasn't at all surprised, the way everybody else was, when they started putting it all together.

Do you remember The Comeback? When they were so far behind that one time, and the way they came back to win it? Wasn't that amazing? And how about that other time, the one in extra innings? And The Home Run? And The Pinch Hit?

And The Out? Who can forget The Out?

I can't even find the words to describe it!

It's like the Rockies are a team of destiny, and every move they make turns out to be total genius. And speaking of moves, has anybody ever done the kind of job managing that our guy's been doing? Plus the way he kept those kids focused when it was looking dark and they could have just thrown in the towel? "Mr. Manager" -- that's the only thing you can call him.

And speaking of towels, isn't that incredible? All those towels waving all over the ballpark? I've never seen anything like it -- it's like being right in the middle of a blizzard! That's how it looks on TV anyway. Incredible.

And talk about a lights-out bullpen! Pitching and defense -- that's how you win pennants. I've always said that, and they went out and proved it, and with the whole world watching, too.

I guess I'll have to get used to that. Sharing my Rockies with the rest of the world, I mean. No problem -- I can be gracious if I have to. After all, think of all those fans whose favorite teams didn't go anywhere in the playoffs, or even make the playoffs. They're probably feeling pretty lonely right about now, and desperate, and if they want to hop on the Rockies bandwagon, even this late in the season with the World Series just around the corner, why not?

I'm sure they'd do the same for me.
