Who? Us? Proof is in the Eye of the BeholderBy Rick Horowitz
Q. So what did you find out? A. We found out that Iraq is still producing weapons of mass destruction. Q. You've already read all 12,000 pages of Iraq's declaration? A. We haven't read all 12,000 pages. Some of the information in the declaration is very technical, and some of the information is written in Arabic. Q. So how many pages did you have to read to find out that Iraq is still producing weapons of mass destruction? A. We didn't have to read any pages. We already knew it. Q. If you already knew it, then why did you insist on Iraq producing a declaration? A. We didn't insist on Iraq producing a declaration. We only went along to satisfy the rest of the Security Council, and the rest of the world. Q. And are they satisfied? A. It doesn't matter if they're satisfied. It only matters if we're satisfied. Q. And are you satisfied? A. Of course not -- everybody knows they're liars. Q. And the inspections have uncovered their lies? A. The inspections have uncovered many things. Q. So the inspectors have found incriminating evidence against Iraq? A. I didn't say that. Q. Then what did they find? A. Many things. Q. But nothing that proves Iraq is still producing weapons of mass destruction? A. Iraq is a large country. The inspections have just started. And more inspectors are on the way. Q. So once there are more inspectors, they'll be able to find the evidence? A. Of course not -- Iraq has had years to hide the evidence. Q. So if you don't think the inspectors are going to find any evidence, why are the inspectors looking for it? A. They don't have to find any evidence. It's not up to us to prove that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction. It's up to Iraq to prove that they don't. Q. But how do they prove that they don't have something? Isn't that a logical impossibility? A. That's not our problem. Our problem that is Iraq's weapons of mass destruction are a threat to our security. Q. But do we have proof that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction? A. Maybe we do. Maybe we don't. Q. Will we reveal that proof to the rest of the world? A. Maybe we will. Maybe we won't. This isn't like making marmalade -- if they destroyed their weapons, there would be records of it. Q. So you'd be satisfied if they'd turn over those records. A. Of course not -- everybody knows they're liars. Q. So if they say they don't have any weapons of mass destruction...? A. If they say they don't have any weapons of mass destruction, that proves they're lying, and they'll have to face the consequences. Q. And if they say they do have weapons of mass destruction? A. That proves they've been lying, and they'll have to face the consequences. Q. But if you can't prove they have the weapons, and they can't prove they don't, how is this dispute ever going to be resolved? A. The same way it was always going to be resolved. Posted 12/10/02.
